Macs are cheaper than a comparable Windows machine, and have been for some time now. You must be thinking of Apple during the 1990's, when the company was run by a former Pepsi exec, and not their founder - Steve Jobs. If you want to rip on Apple of the 1990's, I'll be right there with you. I hate to tell you this, but it's almost 2007. The 90's were a long time ago. Time to get with the program.

Funny, I can't remember the last time I built a Mac. Do they sell eMachine Macs? I hope so, I just bought one with monitor, printer, for $179 from Walmart.
